The turning of a new year always bears some interesting summaries, many of which include top 10 lists. My recent research into upcoming trends provided a flurry of mind numbing statistics. Some were more surprising than others, but all are just as important as they help to frame what businesses need to be focusing on and doing with our marketing.

Here we've listed our  Top 12 Internet Marketing Statistics for 2015, what they mean for businesses, and questions to consider for your 2015 marketing plans.

 Mobile

1. The number of people connecting using mobile only has almost doubled from last year. Worldwide, the amount of mobile-only Internet users without fixed lines is projected to amount to 788.32 million subscribers in 2015.

2. 80% of smartphone owners use their device in stores to shop.

3. Two-thirds of in-store mobile searches are conducted to help make purchasing decisions

What does this mean? Mobile phones are a shopping device that help people find and determine what they want in a real time environment.

Questions to ask yourself:
- Does my website function and look appropriate on a smart device?
- Was it built with responsive design in mind?

4. The average number of projected emails to received/sent is 125/day in 2015 compared to 105 in 2011. These numbers are slowing do to the feverish growth in IM (Instant messaging) and social media. IM is growing at 11% annually.

What does this mean? Email is still vital but customers are using alternative communication avenues to ask questions.

Question to ask yourself:
- Am I ready to communicate customers and potential customers through these alternative means?

5. Social media accounts are expected to hit 3.9 billion worldwide by the end of 2015 in comparison to the 2.4 billion that was around in 2011.

6. Stats show that 7. 60% of 50 to 60 year olds are active on social media, 18-29 year olds have an 89% usage and the 30-49 bracket sits at 72%....In the 65 plus bracket, 43% are using social media.

7. Facebook is the #1 influencer of purchases for 47% of Americans

What does this mean? Social Media isn’t just for the kids, it's not going away, and more people are using it to make purchasing decisions then ever before. If you’re business does not have a social
media strategy, then you’re losing customers.

Questions to ask yourself:
- Did I put up a Facebook page and not really have a strategy as to how it could really help my business? - - When was the last time I actually posted something?
- Should I be thinking about a content strategy?

8. Time is money. 47% of customers expect a website to load in 2 seconds or less.

9. Nearly half (46%) of people say a website’s design is their number one criterion for determining the credibility of a company.

What does this mean? Nothing has really changed with websites except that people have less patience with poorly designed ones.

Questions you should ask yourself:

- Am I wearing the same pants from 5 years ago? Styles change and the design options and programming techniques available today from even 2 years ago is like comparing a Lamborghini to a Model T.
- Is my site outdated? Is it smart phone friendly? What is my bounce rate and am I losing people before they even enter my website? Monitoring and analyzing your web traffic is the key to determining how well your site is really doing.

10. Using the word “video” in email subject lines boosts open rates by 19%, click through rates (CTR) by 65% and reduces unsubscribers by 26%

11.33% of tablet owners watch one hour of video per day on their device.

12. 74% of all Internet traffic in 2017 will be in video.

What does this mean? There’s a new revolution under way. Would you rather read about something or watch a brief video on it? Yup, me too.
